Toasts with the Most
Ready to raise your glass to a new year? Red wine is one of the healthiest tipples you can toast with. But certain reds may be better than others.
According to Joseph Maroon, MD, author of The Longevity Factor, pinot noir, merlot, grenache, cabernet sauvignon, and wines made with tempranillo grapes have the most resveratrol -- that uberhealthful grape phenol with disease-thwarting, longevity-boosting powers.
Longevity Boosters Abound New research suggests that champagne also may be a healthy spirit choice because it's made from red pinot noir grapes in addition to white grapes. And red grapes tend to have higher concentrations of resveratrol.
What Resveratrol's Got What's so great about resveratrol? Plenty. Here are a few of the benefits noted by Maroon in his book:
Longevity booster The power phenol may lower your risk of death from just about any cause. Not bad. Cancer fighter. Studies suggest that resveratrol may slow the growth of breast, colon, and prostate cancers, to name a few.
Heart helper Resveratrol may keep your heart healthy by controlling cholesterol, reducing blood clot risk, and helping to manage blood pressure.
Dementia preventer Resveratrol seems to thwart the brain plaques involved in Alzheimer's. Not a drinker? No worries..
Real Age Benefit Getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements can make your RealAge 6 years younger.
